The 2026 Irish Summer National Youth & Senior Championships witnessed a thrilling showcase of talent, with Tom Fannon's record-breaking performance in the 50m Freestyle taking center stage. Fannon's time of 21.58 not only secured his place as Ireland's fastest-ever male swimmer but also ranked him as the tenth-fastest in the world this year and the third-fastest by a European swimmer. This achievement is all the more remarkable considering the previous record holder, Fannon himself, who set a time of 21.74 at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The competition also featured a range of other events, including the Mixed 15yrs & Over 400m Mixed Medley Relay, where Trojan claimed gold in a winning time of 4:09.34, narrowly edging out Bangor. The Female 1500m Freestyle events showcased impressive distance swimming performances, with Isabel Knight (Glenalbyn) taking gold in the 15yrs category, Olivia O'Neill (Templeogue) securing silver, and Zoe Dong (Tallaght) claiming bronze.
The Male & Open 200m Backstroke events saw John Shortt (National Centre Limerick) produce an outstanding 1:56.83 to claim gold, while the Female 100m Butterfly events delivered high-quality performances, with several races decided by the finest of margins. The Male & Open 50m Freestyle events brought the session to a thrilling conclusion, with Tom Fannon's record-breaking performance in the 18yrs & Over final.
The Female 200m Individual Medley events showcased strong all-round performances across the age groups, with a number of closely contested races. The Male & Open 100m Butterfly brought day two of the competition to a close, with Thomas Bugler (Sundays Well) delivering a dominant performance in the 17yrs race.
